I think art is about making conscious choices. This is Riri (a.k.a.) Posing with Purpose, a model based in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This past Spring, I took a drive out to her area for another client, and while in her neck of the woods, was blessed to work on some art with her.
RiRi’s main goal as a model, I learned during my visit, is to serve as a positive role model for other plus-size models; to help women realize that no matter your size, you should feel good about your body image, and that if you want to model, you can achieve your goals.
I think this is a wonderful message to promote.
RiRi wanted to do an implied nude shoot, but it in a non-traditional setting – we shot this in a local tattoo parlor, not a photography studio.
This is one of my favorite shots from 2016, for sure.
Anyone who's shot with me knows I'm meticulous about "getting the light right." Lighting was a single tattoo machine-mounted LED light, actually, placed maybe 7-8 feet behind her.
On her left, the side light is that same single light bleeding through a thin translucent curtain.
I intended to showcase her beautiful tattoos, and also the artistic vulnerability of the implied pose.
I one day hope to shoot with RiRi again.
